Last night I watched the Dateline special on the situation in Bergamo, Italy, where hospitals are overwhelmed. This morning I saw several posts on social media indicating that we were winning the battle by physical distancing. So I thought it would be useful to compare San Diego County and California with two places out of

Update #8 – April 5, 2020
The rate of daily new cases has been relatively flat for 3 or 4 days. If we can keep this rate steady, even at a 20% hospitalization rate we would need somewhere around 375 extra beds over the next month, which is probably within our capacity. Keep up the physical distancing, everyone! California’s population-normalized testing
Update #7 – April 4, 2020 *
Comments on today’s report, April 4, 2020. The backlog of tests in California has largely been cleared up, going from almost 60,000 to 13,000 today. California’s rate of 288 per 100,000 people is still less than the US average of 491, but it’s a big improvement. Even better, the clearing up of these cases did

Comments on today’s report, April 1, 2020. I’m opening up this to discussion, with one caveat – NO POLITICS. I’m very political myself, but the discussion on this post should be limited to questions/observations about the numbers only. As soon as I see a political post, I’ll go back to a no discussion policy. These
Update #3 – March 31, 2020
Comments on today’s report, March 31, 2020. THE DATA 1) The cases per 10k people in CA and SD is less than half that of the nation. Note, though, that while 1/3 of 1% of the US population has been tested, 1/4 that many people have been tested in CA. 2) The doubling rate in
Update #2 – March 30
Comments on today’s report. Sorry for the length, but quite a few people DM’d me with suggestions. 1) two of you wanted to include Carlsbad stats, so I’ve done that. 2) I moved the population figures below the fold, since those won’t change from day to day. 3) I’ve added a row, “Doubling Rate in
1st Update – March 29, 2020
PLEASE NOTE: A new tracking report will be posted each day with current data and the date in the header. Over 90 people responded to my poll, and 80% voted yes, so here’s the first installment. In the spirit of “just the facts” I’m not allowing discussion on these posts. However, if you think of
