I had a wonderful Labor Day weekend with my family, and had the luxury of not thinking every minute about covid-19. I felt a bit guilty about taking so many days off, but now I’m ready to resume my posts, much to the chagrin of a few redditors who might have been hoping I was

Is “the herd” on the table?
Now, they talk about Sweden, but Sweden is suffering very gravely. You know that, right? Sweden did that. “The herd.” They call it “the herd.” Sweden is suffering very, very badly. April 7, 2020 – White House briefing On Monday, the Washington Post reported that Trump advisor Scott Atlas was pushing herd immunity as a
Still Puzzled
Comments on yesterday’s post convinced me I’m not crazy and that I haven’t suddenly fallen into a spell of innumeracy. Some readers suggested that the discrepancies I couldn’t figure out might be due to “testing adjustments.” I looked into that. Remember, my cumulative case numbers were very close to what was on the state’s website.
Puzzled
Question for you data nerds out there. I’ve been trying to replicate the exact numbers for cases that the state is using, and so far, I’ve been stymied. Here’s the cases reported by the state. As you can see, this is pretty close to the data I have, which I download from the CA DHHS
One thing to worry about
Some people have nothing to worry about, but most of us have at least one issue that keeps us up at night. Maybe it’s the contractor who didn’t show up to do the tiling for the bathroom remodel. Perhaps Sally isn’t doing her homework on time. And why won’t Billy clean his room? Others have

Thank you! So many people wrote yesterday with really nice messages of support. I really, really appreciate it. Periodically, I do lectures on various topics in front of up to 150 people. You get feedback right away about the effectiveness of the talk – are people looking at their cell phones? Is there a healthy
Good news and non-news
First, the good news. Some readers yesterday accused me of never covering the progress LA, Orange, and SD were making in slowing the spread of COVID. In fact, I covered those three counties in my post on August 19. Sorry, but I don’t analyze the same data day in and day out. On top of
American Exceptionalism = 300,000 Deaths?
Today, as we log 180,000 deaths from COVID, we have a grim look into the crystal ball known as the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), which is part of the University of Washington. The IHME model hit the news way back in April, when they raised the possibility that hospitals could get overwhelmed
County Catchup, Part 2
Kern, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara & Ventura This is the conclusion of the county update for southern CA counties, not including LA, OC and SD. This post doesn’t have charts on the regular localities, you can see all the up to date numbers on the COVID Interactive pages on zorgi.me: Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside &
